10. The future

This concluding chapter summarises some of the most important changes that have happened in Suri since the late 1980s, as well as describing some recent new developments – notably the ready availability of micro-credit, the arrival of electricity and, in the near future, a road. Suri villagers’ predictions for the future of their village are outlined, before ending with a reflection on the contribution made by external agencies – particularly in this case Swiss development cooperation – to the development of rural Nepal.

The broad consensus of opinion amongst those in Suri with whom I have talked is that life is generally better now than it was 20 years ago. This is certainly also my own impression – despite the bloodshed of the civil conflict and the many personal tragedies associated with it. Suri villagers are generally better nourished, better clothed, better informed and, largely as a result, often more self-assured than they were….
